In the revised Fourth Edition of the best selling text, John W. Creswell and new co author Cheryl N. Poth explore the philosophical underpinnings, history, and key elements of five qualitative inquiry approaches: narrative research, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case study. Preserving Creswell′s signature writing style, the authors compare the approaches and relate research designs to each of the traditions of inquiry in a highly accessible manner. Featuring new content, articles, pedagogy, references, and expanded coverage of ethics throughout, the Fourth Edition is an ideal introduction to the theories, strategies, and practices of qualitative inquiry.

This is one of John Creswell’s best books by far. I purchased it in paperback and actually had it spiral bound by a local print shop because I used it so much. I can’t go on enough of how helpful this book was with one of my doctoral courses. I am glad our professor choose this text because when we went through various pieces of the five qualitative designs it gave great examples, detailed lists for guidance, and a great glossary. The studies in the text were very helpful as well. I recommend every masters and doctoral student to add it to their bookshelf, I guarantee you will use it a lot. It is invaluable!!!

The use of charts to create an alternative visual to the narrative of the text is extremely helpful if you tend to respond to such visualizations. The discussion of each of five approaches is thorough. I do wonder, however, why the focus on/limitation to five approaches when learninAg about others seems just as valid a pursuit. For example, I’m curious about Applied Action research but no mention of that is made in this text. I’ve not examined Creswell’s other books on qualitative research, so it is possible that he has written on other research approaches.

Creswell does a nice job of presenting the different qualitative approaches in a fairly straight forward manner. But this is more of an introduction. If you are actually going to a do a study you will need to dip into the harder stuff.

This book contains great information. They are many tables that make the information accessible and easily understood. However, it is hard to highlight and take notes in the book because of its paperback binding and smaller margins (doesn’t stay open on its one, not as much space). As a grad students this is a bit of a downer because it does take me longer to notate the way I normally do.

“Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design…” is a excellent guide to conducting qualitative research. Creswell does an amazing job at breaking down the research process and giving examples of the different types of research methods.

Prior to reading this book, I found myself overwhelmed at the prospect of embarking on a qualitative research study for my upcoming dissertation. Creswell does an excellent job of comparing and explaining five popular approaches to qualitative inquiry. I clearly understand that I would be more interested in either a narrative or ethnographic study as well as understanding the value of the phenomenological, case study, and grounded theory approaches. He also lists excellent resources for further exploration of various aspects of qualitative research.

Although Creswell is a generalist when it comes to writing about research, he is a damn good one. In this book, he provides a great overview of qualitative research. Each of the five qualitative research designs (i.e., case study, phenomenology, narrative, ethnography, grounded theory) has its own experts, and Creswell draws on all of them in constructing the book. This book is great for a qualitative research course in graduate school. It should not be used as a resource in a dissertation.

That’s how good this books was. A student just stole it from my bookshelf at the university. When I noticed, I tried to track it down, but alas no one returned it to me. I loved this book

This book is a must-have for inexperienced qualitative researchers. Although I knew I wanted to do a qualitative dissertation, I was unsure of the specific design. This book helped me not only with selecting phenomenology but also the specific type of phenomenology that was appropriate for my research purpose. I frequently referred to this book while writing Ch. 1, 2, and 3, and I can imagine that I will use it for the remaining chapters. An awesome resource for your qualitative research toolkit.

This is a required book in my graduate studies. But, it would be an extremely useful resource book for management consultants. It is theory-based but easy to read. The intent of the book is to assist researchers in their qualitative research efforts. BUT … I find it directly applicable to commercial consulting work such as with process improvement, strategy ideation, and solving problems with groups of people. If you are buying this as a student – get a new copy so you can write your own notes in the margin.

“Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches” by John W. Creswell has been an indispensable resource for my PhD program. This book provides a comprehensive and clear overview of five key qualitative research approaches: narrative, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case study.Creswell’s detailed explanations and comparative analysis of each approach make it easy to understand their unique characteristics and when to use them. The book also includes practical examples and case studies that illustrate how to apply these methodologies in real research projects. What I appreciate most is Creswell’s balanced presentation, which helps students like me make informed decisions about which approach best suits our research questions and goals. The book also offers valuable insights into data collection, analysis, and interpretation, making it a complete guide for qualitative research. For any PhD student involved in qualitative research, “Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design” is a must-have. It has greatly enhanced my understanding and application of qualitative methods, and I highly recommend it to anyone pursuing in-depth qualitative research.
